At Living Water, we use a simple, yet highly effective method of teaching children how to swim. With 17 years of experience, we have discovered what works and what doesn’t. Each class is half an hour in length with a maximum of 3 students per class. This instructor-to-student ratio allows the one-on-one attention needed to teach children to rescue themselves in a timely manner. If your child already knows how to swim, but struggles with their technique, we will teach him or her the proper arm and leg movements and body positioning to make them more effective swimmers. During that half hour, your child will receive gentle, yet structured, one-on-one instruction that will teach him or her life saving skills. There will be no need for any adult other than the swim instructor in the pool during instruction time. Your child will never be taught to swim to an adult. This is because if a child fell into a pool, there may not be anyone for them to swim to. Living Water will train your child to automatically look for the side of the pool; not an adult. As you can see in the video on our home page, our Living Water graduate, Carter, immediately turned to the nearest side & was able to pull himself to safety quickly. Depending on age, comfort level, and physical ability, your child will master a progressive series of swim & survival skills. We begin teaching children as young as 12 months old. Usually children from 12 to 24 months learn the following skills first, but this can vary, depending on his or her unique response. 12 to 24 months 1. hold breath 2. roll over onto back 3. float on back unassisted 4. learn to grab side of pool 5. learn to kick to side of pool 6. learn to crab walk on side of pool 7. learn how to get out of pool on their own
24 months and older 1. hold breath 2. learn to grab side of pool 3. learn to kick to side of pool 4. learn to crab walk on side of pool 5. learn how to get out of pool on their own 6. roll over onto back 7. float on back unassisted 8. while swimming, float on back, then back to swimming 9. learn basic swimming and stroke skills Your child will learn these skills first in swimwear. When this is mastered, your child will then learn the same skills fully clothed. When a child falls into a pool, he or she will often not be dressed in swim attire, & swimming in jeans & a jacket is much different from swimming in a swimsuit! Although we are proud of our success rate (100% of our students have been able to swim back to the side and get out on their own), there is no swim lesson program that can guarantee your child from drowning. Survival swim lessons is just one of many layers of protection your children should have in order to prevent drowning. Please see our Safety First page for more information. |
